We just added the Crooks Tour blog to our list of resource links (which looks like it could use some updating), and recently there have been some intriguing tales of west side criminality. The Frank Egan murder case in Ingleside Terraces and the violent death of an 1870s transgendered frog-catcher from Ocean View have been recent fascinating entries.

Nefarious San Francisco Tales
Monday, November 14th, 2011Ingleside Terraces Book coming in 2011
Wednesday, May 19th, 2010In the fall of 2011, Outside Lands Media will publish a book to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the residential park neighborhood of Ingleside Terraces. Woody LaBounty, creator of the recently published book, Carville-by-the-Sea: San Francisco’s Streetcar Suburb, will be the author, along with help from current and past Ingleside Terraces residents and historians.
Formerly the site of the Ingleside Racetrack (1895-1905), the Ingleside Terraces neighborhood was developed by Joseph Leonard’s Urban Realty Improvement Company beginning in 1910, and features ornamental features including a Giant Sundial.
Secrets of the El Rey Theatre
Monday, March 1st, 2010
Our friend Therese Poletti (who is the author of a great book, check it out) posted on her blog some interesting information on what was planned but didn’t get into the El Rey Theater at 1970 Ocean Avenue.
El Rey Theatre Blueprints Show What’s Missing
The El Rey was designed by master architect Timothy Pflueger, who was the genius behind the Castro Theater and, on the west side of town, Washington High School.
Supporting your local library
Monday, June 8th, 2009Seems a day can’t go that I don’t get notice of some SF branch library news. The Branch Library Improvement Program has been in full swing for a few years now, and frequent library users like me continue to modify our habits: West Portal branch is closed, go to Parkside branch. Parkside branch is closed, go to Merced branch. Both are closed, but West Portal is open again… There may be a day in the future when all are finished and open. (Who am I kidding?)
Because WNP loves libraries we usually try to help with the fundraising efforts involved with these branch renovations, and in November we’ll be co-producing a Sunset/Parkside history day with the Friends of the Library folk. The new Ingleside branch library will be opening on Ocean Avenue maybe in September.
Would you like to help make your branch library a great place? Contact the Friends of the SF Library to find out how you can help.
WNP on KPIX
Tuesday, May 5th, 2009Every few months or so, the folks from “Eye on the Bay” call me for a story on a) Carville, b) earthquake shacks, or c) the Ingleside Racetrack. (They always seem to lose the historical photos I gave them for the piece before.) Nice guys, and it usually turns out I went to high school with the cameraman.
So this last go around we talked about the racetrack for a story called “Lost San Francisco.” The piece is at the end of the 21-minute show. This time around I’m a “Sunset historian.” Don’t take offense all you OMI residents; it wasn’t my idea.
