Bringing the Jet Set Back to Larsen Park

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

We always kept alert in the back seat. A drive to Stonestown or Serramonte or down to the Peninsula for some family holiday event would mean a glimpse of the jet standing in the grass of Larsen Park. My brother and I would beg our parents to stop, just for a little bit, so we could go climb on it, through it, pretend to be pilots or “bad guys” crawling along the wings.

From the 1950s to the early 1990s, three different retired Navy jets served as playground equipment. In 1993, the last, an F-8 Crusader, graffitti-covered and leaking lead, was removed for restoration at the Pacific Coast Air Museum (a continuing effort).

San Francisco Chronicle writer Peter Hartlaub has recently done a very nice piece on the jets.

Now after 20 jet-less years at Larsen Park, a small community group is working to bring a new jet for the climbing pleasure of future generations of Parkside kids (and those traveling through who convince their parents to pull over).

Getting a real Navy jet, and making it playground-safe, is impractical in these more complicated days, so a new structure in the form of a jet with netting fanning out behind like exhaust has been designed. (I declare it pretty cool.) Grants are being found, money still needs to be raised, but Supervisor Carmen Chu and her staff are working hard to get this done.

Join me at a informational meeting Tuesday, May 22, 2012 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the Wawona Clubhouse, 901 Wawona Street at 20th Avenue. We’ll hear more about the plan, see the sketches, and maybe I will bring some old photos of the previous planes (anyone have some to share?).

The St. Cecilia grammar school, Class of 1960, is holding its 50th Reunion in October. If you were a member of this class, and would like more information about the reunion, please contact St. Cecilia Alumni President, Lily Angelopoulos at langelopoulos@stceciliaschool.org. She will pass your inquiry along to the Reunion Committee, and they will provide you with the details.

Preservation can get ugly

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Those with a bit of sf history knowledge may remember the spite fence that Charles Crocker erected on Nob Hill to punish a neighbor who wouldn’t sell his house so Crocker could have the mansion space he wanted.

A bit of that has recently erupted in the Parkside District. A property owner has been tussling with neighbors and the planning department over the future of a home built about 1920. Depending on who you talk to, or what permit application you read, the owner of 2514-23rd Avenue wants to demolish, expand, renovate, or just replace the foundation of the attractive Craftsman house. It’s gotten ugly enough that the owner erected a plywood wall around the empty residence and adorned it with some biblically-themed barbs aimed at a neighbor.

A modern-day "spite fence" has been erected in the dispute over the preservation of a Parkside home.

Covenant Presbyterian Church

Covenant Presbyterian Church

I met with Mark McBeth at Covenant Presbyterian Church across the street this morning, touring the terrific meeting and assembly rooms available over at 321 Taraval Street. The congregation, like many across the city, has shrunk; the buildings, like many places of worship across the city, need expensive maintenance. So Covenant is hurting and tough questions about its survival are approaching.

Mark is a great community partner and is happy to host WNP events. Our first might be in July: a presentation on researching your west SF house. Stay tuned.
